FPS Beginner's Checklist
I've been playing Nexuiz for about 4 months, but there are some things that I've just now figured out that I should have known from the start. This would be embarrassing except I'm also pretty new to playing games on my computer in general. I only played on a game console before. If you're new to first person shooters, here is some valuable information.
So much to do, so little time to do it

RE: FPS Beginner's Checklist
Cool man. Good concise list. I agree with all things you've said. Especially the mouse, omg what a difference it makes. You don't even know until you try :D.
Inspire your neighbor, they'll inspire you back.My old mouse used to send me spinning staring upwards at the ceiling if I turned too fast :(. RE: FPS Beginner's Checklist
IMO 60fps is not enough, there's a lot you'll be missing in fast/close fights, you need AT LEAST 70. For me, 90 fps is where the real smoothness starts. But it's so complicated because of monitors refresh rates.
I read a lot of stuff about fps and the human eye and it seems to be different from person to person, but I think anybody could "feel" the difference between 60 and 90. Especially in a game like Nexuiz where there is a lot of fast movement with the mouse. The human eye does not have a "fixed" maximum fps it can see, so the more fps, the better. Be it 90, 120 or 300. I'm gonna try to find a very interesting article I read a while ago about that stuff. |

RE: FPS Beginner's Checklist
Good point nifrek. I'd be interested in the article if you find it. My frame rate ranges from 50 to 150 depending on the map and number of players, but my monitor's refresh rate is just 60 Hz.

I feel pretty comfortable at around 100 fps. That's when my nex aim gets good. But I'm on Mac (Apple didn't support OpenGL 2.0 completely) and it often falls down to around 60 fps even on lowest quality settings. I find it is still possible to play well, but you have to favor explosive weapons since your aim can be off. It's kind of like adjusting to a high ping, which thankfully isn't a problem unless I try a European server. |

RE: FPS Beginner's Checklist
Higher is better, you are getting more frames (pictures) per second :)

RE: FPS Beginner's Checklist
1. Set your mouse acceleration to zero or off - You do this in your operating system control panel and/or your mouse driver preferences. Just did this last month. What a difference.
haha, proud to be a member of Nexuiz Ninjaz - Practicing the Ninja Art of Nexuiz since Mar 2008.
If you are using Un*x system, btw what else is there. You can use the command "xset m 0/0 0" to turn off mouse acceleration. Your Welcome, and GOOD KNIGHT... |
