Paraphrased from the demo:

Quote:As I said on IRC, movement is an art that everyone thinks they understand but no one has yet mastered in all dimensions. This is the mentality you must understand to begin to master the skills that build your movement. Concept is vastly important and understanding with your mind first, how you break down hard problems into simple decisions is the foundation for the following methods of movement I am about to cover in this impromptu class. This class is based on methodology and observation of some more advanced techniques based on concepts of movement.

This is not a finalized lesson but a learning experience for students as well as myself. I hope to create some more structured lessons in the future. Here I was just getting my feet wet with the other participants of this first (of hopefully many) late night sessions. I think this one went very well.

Well, I've come up with a basic idea for a teaching map, and added 8 courses to it. The map can be expanded to add more courses. I've also provided a TEACHERSREADTHIS.txt which explains all of the courses, gives them ideas of what they might include in their speeches, and gives an idea for a timelimit for that specific course.

Now, these courses aren't very hardworked on, as they are just "idea" courses. some of them you might want to keep, and some of them are useless. The map was built to follow the theme of the website in general.

In the main room, there is an "extra room" for each lesson. If you step into that "extra room," you will be teleported to the room relative to the lesson.

The latest pk3 can always be accessed here, but don't put it on any teaching servers until I am completely finished, because I AM not going to put version numbers on this map, because it shouldn't be in circulation at any servers o.o.

Class idea : Beginner intro to weapons

I've been thinking of offering this as my first class. I think we need to get some of these beginner classes out first. There are players on Nexuiz public servers that still don't know how all of the weapons work. I see it all the time.

Keep in mind that this would be a beginner's class. Nobody here on NN would be a likely candidate for the class, so I would have to invite people directly from the public servers that I think needs help.

Hopefully, this will lead to creating more Beginner video turorials for Nexuiz (similar to what -Z- did with laser jumping/bunny hopping) If that happened, then perhaps we could convince the Alientrap people to place a link from their main page to a set of "beginner" videos on the NexuizNinjaz site. \o/ :-D

I've been thinking of how this class might work. I would really like to create some simple maps with plenty of weapons and ammo to go around. I would walk through each weapon's pluses and minuses, when to use them, when not to use them. Then I would go through a drill with each weapon so they would be able to practice the technique I'm showing them. I would overview the damage given by each item (using Dave's chart from the Nexuiz forum) and speed comparisons.

After going through each weapon, I would talk about how to counter each weapon with another weapon, or with a certain tactic. This would build up their strategy with weapons usage.

I would start with the basics of the laser just to make sure that the participants understand the concept of laser jumping as it is used in combination with various weapons.

Rocket Launcher
Pros and cons: Slow, does high damage, has radius damage, can cause damage through walls/floors, can be used to propel you (rocket jump and rocket flying) can blow up in your own face, can hurt your teammates (if team damage is turned on), can cause your teammates weapons to blow up in their own face, can knock people off platforms, could knock yourself or teammates off platforms.

Scenarios:

Enemies are in the same room as you (within 40 ft) but far enough away that you don't take damage yourself. You shoot toward their feet and pop them up in the air so you can hit them again to finish them off. Don't let them get too close to you.

Enemies are slightly further away (within 80 ft). Since the rocket is slow, you are at a disadvantage with this scenario if they have a faster weapon. But you can still fight them. The enemy will react to your rockets by moving out of the way (usually strafing). The best tactic is to launch a rocket and cause them to strafe left or right, and then start running toward them to close the distance. As you are running, launch another rocket in the other direction to make the enemy move back the other way. Each time you fire, you aim closer to the middle so the enemy is eventually stuck in one spot. Then you close in on the enemy (within 20 ft) and finish them off. Bunny hop while doing this and it makes it more difficult for them to hit you back, while also increasing your speed toward them.

Against Snipers. A rocket be used to slowly pick off snipers who camp a lot. Launch the rocket from far away toward the camping sniper. It moves so slowly that the sniper doesn't see it coming. Better launch two or three of them in a row in case the sniper doesn't die from the first one. Launch them a couple feet apart in case the sniper moves to the left or right to avoid the first one.

In very close range. Not ideal scenario. usually this is what people do to counter the rocket launcher. They rush at you and cause you to kill yourself. Best thing to do here is shoot over their head and right click your rockets so the explosion only hits them and doesn't hit yourself. Alternatievly, you could use the RL in combination with laser jumping by jumping over the enemy and shooting down on them.

I would then cover some prediction techniques. I would basically stand about 40 ft away and strafe left or right and they would have to launch the rocket to connect with me at a given point. I would compare it to throwing a pass in football/soccer/basketball. You have to predict where the person is going to be a second later and aim there.

---------

Nex gun

pros and cons: fast firing (virtually instant hit), slow reload, strong push, but can't be used to propel you (nex-jumping), right click to zoom, disadvantage for close range fighting.

I would talk about some good techniques to improve the nex aiming, which would involve utilizing strafing a lot to smooth out the mouse movement. When picking off snipers, I tend to zoom in, aim the target, then let go of zoom and I fire while it is zooming out. This tends to stabilize my mouse movement and keeps the aim on target. I'll experiment with this to make sure this is really what is happening and it's not just in my head :-) it's something I've been observing and experimenting with lately.

I would then go into minstagib and we would do some drills.

I would talk about nex weapon switching to increase reload time. This is something I don't currently do, but I know how to do it. I'll have to practice it a bit before teaching it.

I would cover how to adjust mouse sensitivity to refine the nex aim.

One drill I would have them try is to laser jump up and fire off the nex at the top of their jump.

--------------

Electro
pros and cons: Fast shooting, but not instant hit, fast reload time, radius damage, can shoot through thin walls and floors, can use combo hit to detonate the electro balls, can use the electro balls to clear out a room, can cause self-damage and team damage.

I've used the electro successfully to counter snipers because it's relatively fast (difficult to dodge) and it has radius damage. On some maps (depending on the colors) it's difficult to see an electro shot coming at you.

You can aim at people's feet to bounce them up and stop them from running, keeping them in place so you can hit them again. The electro refires so quickly that you can often stop a person in their tracks and hit them a few times within seconds.

Secondary fire uses. You can clear out a room full of enemies. You can shoot the electro balls with your primary fire to create one big explosion. The explosion of the electro balls can cause other people's weapons to explode in their face (including your teammates...be careful!). This is particularly why you DO NOT FILL UP YOUR OWN BASE WITH ELECTRO BALLS if you have other teammates in the room with you. :-) (pet peeve alert)

In close combat (aka dog fighting), you can fire off one electro ball at the enemy and shoot the enemy with your primary fire. The radius damage will cause the electro ball to explode as well to increase the overall effect of the electro attack. This is a very good technique to use regularly with the electro because it ends up being more powerful than people anticipate. You're essentially doubling the power of the electro, making it a good weapon to counter most other weapons, including the rocket launcher.

Combo up in air. This is a really cool technique for attacking people perched above you, or even people who laser jump over you. You shoot a couple electro balls in the air and shoot at the balls, making a big air explosion.

This would be followed up with some practice drills.

--------

Crylink

Nearly worthless at far distances because the spread of the shots is too wide. Close distance, the crylink becomes useful. I would recommend using the crylink's secondary at close range. The secondary fire shoots out 6 bolts at at time. When you land that at very close range (within a few feet) then all 6 bolts land at once and cause LOTS of damage.

This weapon has a slight bit of radius damage (though less than the electro) so it can cause self-damage and damage to teammates in close combat.

--------

Machine gun
The bane of Nexuiz :-)
This weapon is obnoxious primarily because it is difficult to avoid (due to instant hit scan) and also because the push of it can make it difficult to move, effectively causing someone to be stuck in place.

The secondary fire actually makes a great long range weapon. It can be used to pick off enemies from a distance, similar to the nex but with less power and much faster reload. Some people find this easier to use than the Nex for long distance attacks.

This weapon is planned to change to have less push than previously, reducing the "stuck in place" effect when being attacked.

--------

Shotgun

Hit scan weapon. Simply put... use close up and use secondary fire a lot. It can be used long distance if absolutely necessary, though the spread of the shot makes it difficult to land.

We'll practice some 1v1 drills so that people get an understanding of the best techniques for applying the shotgun. For example, if it's just me and an enemy and we both have shotguns, then I sometimes try to jump over them and shoot them in the back at close range. If they are standing in place, then I try circle-strafing while shooting inward toward them.

--------

Mortar

A very misunderstood and underutilized weapon. This weapon is one of the most powerful weapons in Nexuiz, as demonstrated to me (or rather, on me) by a couple advanced players once upon a time. From that point on, I decided to learn the mortar.

It's a fast-traveling projectile weapon with quick reload and a good blast radius. It shoots with an arc, so it is difficult to learn to aim it. That is tihs weapon's only downfall, and the primary reason why people don't use it more often. Once you understand how to aim this weapon, it becomes a more powerful and useful rocket launcher alternative.

The most useful technique is to "juggle" an enemy by shooting at their feet and popping them on the air. Then you continue to shoot at their feet when they land and so they never hit the ground. If you are lucky, you can pop someone up against a wall and then you shoot the wall and the blast radius hits them again while they are up in the air (that way, you can hit them in the air without needing to have perfect aim).

By habit, you should aim at a person's feet with the mortar.

Since this weapon will arc, you can use this to attack an enemy at a distance and over an obstacle.

The secondary fire is not that effective, but it has its use. The secondary mortar is very slow, so it is easy to dodge, but you can use this to control the enemies' movement to setup the primary mortar shot. It can be used to cause people to come out of hiding places, or rooms. If you are about to attack someone in a room, you can fire the secondary mortar into the room. When they come out of the room, then you hit them with the primary mortar. Since the secondary mortar isn't used very often, many people don't notice it.

The biggest use of the mortar is to counter the rocket launcher. Since the mortar fires so fast and it has a radius damage, it is dangerous for someone with a rocket launcher to fight against a good mortar user because the mortar will cause their own rocket to blow up in their face. You can aim at their body or at the ground in front of them, or at a wall near them. If the rocket is caught in that blast radius, it will explode. This is even better when there are two or more enemies close by one another. Then I can sort of remote detonate one of their rockets and it affects multiple enemies.

I've used the mortar effectively to counter snipers because it fires so quickly and has a bigger radius than the Electro. These two elements make it difficult to dodge.

The mortar is also underestimated by many players because most players don't know how to use it properly. So if you have a mortar, people will tend to rush to attack you without concern. If you know how to use the mortar, you can pop them up into the air and keep them from rushing at you.

Combining this with laser jumping is a great method of attack. It fires so quickly and you can often fire off two shots while up in the air before the opponent can figure out where you are. Additionally, the mortar has more force than the electro, so it will cause the enemy to bump around like a pinball game while you are flying over them.

There are multiple drills for this, including practicing to counter the rocket launcher and also juggling an enemy with multiple mortar hits.

----------

Hagar

The weapon that does the most damage per second...but only if you can aim it properly.

This weapon is mostly useful for hitting a traveling target. It also is good for countering the rocket launcher because its blast radius will detonate a rocket in someone's face. Since this weapon fires so many projectiles at once, they tend to blind the enemy whether they hit directly or land close by them. As a secondary effect, due to the number of projectiles, this weapon is known to cause extra lag for people with slightly older computers. Often, when someone is hit by the hagar, they get stuck in place (similar to the machine gun) and can't seem to move away from it.

I haven't found much use for the secondary mortar fire yet. I've only been able to use it by reflecting it off a wall into a room with enemies inside. This makes it similar to the secondary mortar or secondary electro.

This is a great weapon to use with the strength powerup because it can spread to hit a large area very quickly and kill a whole group of enemy players (not to mention detonating any enemy rockets)

That's all I got for now. I imagine it would be a 2 hour class.

Edit : I just saw that some of these topics are covered on the forum already. Good deal!

--

I just got through reading this thread on the Nexuiz forum regarding the first Nexuiz training sessions. I'm SUPER excited about this idea. It is the most active thing I've seen out of the Nexuiz community in a while, and I really think it will help the community. Coming from a martial arts background, I'm a big fan of training in general.

I used to train people on techniques when I ran a Quake 2 clan back in the day. I mostly trained them on strategy, dog-fighting tactics with the rocket launcher, but also improvement with aiming the rail gun. We had training sessions just like the ones that you guys had last sunday. It worked very well for a lot of players.

I have a lot of ideas for this and I would like to share them here.

First, let's consider recording demos of the class sessions, if possible. I know they are an hour long or more, but it would be a very useful resource for all Nexuiz players. If nothing else, perhaps record the beginning 10 minutes of them where you are explaining the techniques and then leave out the hour or more when people are practicing the technique.

Here are some topics to consider (with notes). Some of these are good for live class sessions, while other topics would be better suited for tutorial videos.

- Configure Nexuiz optimal settings (basic) :
This wouldn't take long to teach. There are quite a few settings that can really help speed up Nexuiz and refine the gameplay to your liking. For example, I play with all of my settings on low and I turn off flashblend to remove halos from rockets.

- Keybinding and communication (basic) :
Most new players don't realize that they can bind keys, and they don't know how to mark "help" points, or read the help messages. They don't know the default number pad messages. There is an art to creating your own custom keybinds. There are a lot of notes on Xeno's website and on the Nexuiz forum related to keybinds and communication.

- Overview of all weapons (basic): This is a necessary class for most players. Many people first playing Nexuiz don't really know what the different weapons can do. They don't realize that the crylink's secondary shot is extremely powerful at close range. Some of them don't even realize that you can remote detonate rockets in mid-air.

- Improving nex aim (intermediate) :
This one was really popular when I was teaching in Q2 (of course, that was with the rail gun, but same thing). The first technique involved setting the aim cursor somewhere on the same horizontal line as the target and using strafing to finalize the aim. It's a much smoother movement and when you get it down properly, you can pull it off quickly. There are lots of other things to consider like staggering your own movement while aiming at an opponent who also has a nex.

The best technique for teaching this is to start by having them sit stationary, like in a sniper position, and I would set god mode on and move around while they try to hit me. I would rocket jump around (or laser jumping in nexuiz) to allow them to try to hit me in the air.

Then after they are comfortable with that, I would eventually get to where we both have a nex and they have to hit me without getting hit (in god mode, of course).

- The power of the mortar (intermediate): this weapon is very underutilized by most players, and it's incredibly powerful. The mortar fires fast and it has a quick reload. I learned how powerful it was when I played some advanced players who preferred it. It can counter the rocket launcher very well if used properly as it can cause the enemy's own rockets to explode in their face. There is the common "jump + fire" technique where you fire at the apex of your jump. It gives you a better angle to hit the opponent's feet. There is the "juggling" technique with the mortar (which is always frustrating).

- Machine gun and shot gun techniques:
Everyone starts out with a shotgun, so you might as well learn to use it properly.

The shotgun is very powerful when used up close.

The alternate fire of the machine gun can be used somewhat as a sniper weapon.

The primary fire of the machine gun can someones screen shake uncontrollably when you unload on them at close range, making the gun somewhat inescapable.

I would introduce circle strafing with this topic as it really works well for the machine gun and shot gun.

- Plasma gun:
Think of it like a mini version of the rocket which moves faster, isn't as powerful, has a smaller radius, but has a faster reload time. This gun has advantages that can take out snipers at long distance, especially because of the radius damage. You don't have to be 100% accurate with it. The faster speed makes it more difficult to avoid as compared to the rocket launcher. You can fire a bunch of shots in the sniper's general area and do damage, whereas the sniper has to hit you dead on in order to retaliate.

Some newer players don't know the "exploding ball" technique. Even players that know how it works, they often don't know when it is most useful.

Also cover how to do the exploding ball technique in mid air (throwing a bunch of balls in the air and shooting them), which can kill people perched above you, or people who laser jumped over you during a dog fight.

- Prediction and patterns (advanced) :
People tend to have patterns in their movement, whether in real life or in gameplay. I think this is the number one skill that has helped me over time. If I beat people 1v1, this is usually the reason. For example, with the rocket launcher, some people say that I have great aim. But it's not necessarily my aim. It's usually because I can predict where someone is about to go and I aim for that spot. It's also a major reason for my base defense ability in CTF.

Predicting movement is definitely something that stems from my martial arts training in real life.

This is something that was absolutely necessary back in the days of dial-up connections, because you always had a delay in your shots. You simply had to predict in order to hit anybody.

I'm not certain how to teach this in a live session. It might be easier to narrate over some video footage of two people fighting in a 1v1 scenario. Then you could pause the video and say "watch how the player seems to do the same thing every couple of seconds. He moves left and then hops to the right. You can use that to your advantage."

Then perhaps following up with a live session of 1v1 dog fighting, perhaps in god mode.

It would be ideal to use a slow motion video technique like used in this video http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QzPrUI40zzM

- Map control (advanced) :
This is the key to 1v1 deathmatch gameplay. Know the map like the back of your hand, listen to noises to determine where the enemy is located (and make noises to distract the enemy), control all weapon and health resources, know all of the respawn points, predict where the opponent will likely respawn next, and make sure that a single death of the enemy results in racking up 3-4 kills in a row.

For CTF, this is important for controlling resources, but also for getting back to your base when you have the flag, or for catching up with the enemy flag carrier to return the flag.

My skill in this area is limited, although I do understand the basics techniques. I don't play enough 1v1.

- Improve CTF gameplay and strategy (advanced) :
This is a large subject that could spill over into multiple sessions. This could be split up into offense and defense classes as there are different strategies for both.

Most players just run around the map and play DM. They don't really think about moving in groups or ways to "crack" the defense of the enemy base.

First, cover some different roles in a CTF game. There are inner defenses, outer defenses, middle ground area (outlands), scouts, people that keep track of resources for the team..."the quad (aka power) is respawning soon", snipers, and then there are different roles when people attack a base together (the strike team).

I've always been pretty good at base defense, and I'm continuing to learn about offensive techniques in CTF. From my defense experience, I know quite a few techniques that people have used to crack the defense. I know of some tricks to harden the defense and how to prepare for an enemy invasion. Like always, it helps to pick up patterns of movement. Some of the best attackers in CTF tend to have their special paths that they prefer, depending on the map. If you pick those up then you can shoot them as they are entering the base.

For offense, there are various strategies when multiple players are attacking a base, like using distraction techniques, getting players to follow you out of their base (this is a big one that works very well), using up their weapons and health that they did not grab (a very common mistake by most players). You can use one player to jump through and scout out the base to prepare for an invasion (see how many people, where they are located, what weapons they have). Then there is the mass invasion where multiple players jump in at once and cause a mess and one player's job is to simply laser jumps through the mess to get the flag and escape. There are lots of strategies to cover here. You have to make sure you can even organize a mass invasion using proper communication. Pick a meetup point, or say "get ready to attack the base within 20 seconds on my mark" or something.

Then there is the strategy of how to best protect your flag carrier to ensure that they get back to base. Lots of stuff to cover.

- Weapon switching and weapon combinations (very advanced) :
I need to improve this myself. Weapons combining is used by most of the advanced players. I have yet to master it, but I really want to. Some players use weapons keybinds near the WASD keys, while some use buttons on their mouse to switch weapons. Then there is the Nex reload trick which involves firing the nex and then switching to another weapon and right back to the Nex to improve the reload time. I believe it cuts the Nex reload time by like 50% or so (they may change this is future Nexuiz versions).

Then there is the weapons combo of using a slower-moving radius damage weapon like the rocket launcher along with an instant-hit weapon like the nex or machine gun. The first weapon sets up the opponent to be hit by the second weapon. I think that is Usil's biggest skill and he is the most dominant 1v1 player in north america. Dresk also does this, although he doesn't play regular Nexuiz, only his own spidflisk mod. Kojn also uses that technique and he's the best player in Europe. The three best Nexuiz players rely heavily on this skill.

--

I would like to further discuss the above topics and create some notes for basic ideas as well as add additional topics. It would be great if we could collaborate to establish some kind of curriculum and method for teaching each topic,
