Thoughts on Playing Laser-Only?

As a recent change in my title might suggest, I've been playing laser-only alot lately.

While I don't always do so, I'm finding it to be a viable strategy.

As a disclaimer (And to avoid sounding like a know-it-all), I'm not saying it's the best strategy, but I'm saying it's a viable and fun one to use now and then.

Here's my thinking on the subject:

With the laser always out, laser movement becomes simpler. This is because you don't have to swap to it, so you can improvise with it much more easily.

You also don't have to worry about ammo. Because the laser doesn't use any ammo, you never run out. This means that in team modes, your teammates can have more of the ammo and weapons, because they aren't part of your strategy. This is especially good when there is a very good player on your team who can really use the better weapons.

The laser is a good weapon to disrupt an opponent's aim with. I've found that in close spaces, I can often overwhelm someone else by smacking them around several times in quick succession.

The laser is also useful in space maps, for obvious reasons. While laser-bouncing foes into space won't win you any friends, it's effective.

There are, of course, disadvantages and difficulties.

Because the laser is the least powerful weapon, an opponent who has stocked up on armor and health is all the more fearsome when you aren't doing much damage.
This can be overcome by hitting them consistently, disrupting their aim. Obviously, it can also be overcome by deviating from the strategy a bit. This is why when I'm playing laser-only, I like to keep a more powerful weapon on hand just in case things get dicey.

It is also a projectile weapon. (Which makes little sense with it being a laser, but I digress)
This means that it can be tricky to hit opponents, as the shot takes time to travel, even if the "blast" is rather speedy.
The standard projectile weapon tactic of shooting the ground and walls around your target reduces how precise your aim needs to be, but it doesn't eliminate it entirely.

Having the laser out constantly also makes it easier to kill yourself by laser-bouncing too much. This is especially hard if you tend to not keep an eye on your health and armor. (Which is something I myself could be better about)
This can be prevented by doing things that are obvious, and generally a good idea whether you're playing laser-only or not.
Things like being careful with your health, trying to laser-bounce effectively (Thus minimizing how much you need to do so), and trying not to do it too much while fighting an opponent.

It's also a fun way to play now and then.

The lack of ammo means that you don't have to worry about running out of ammo. I personally find that kind of relaxing.

Using the laser is also something of a handicap. While it can be troublesome in team modes (Well, not for the other team ) it an be fun in deathmatch. It makes losing less of a big deal, and makes it even more fun when you do well.

It's a fun skill to develop. Using only the laser means rethinking alot of strategy. While it does remove the aspect of considering which weapons are best for which situations (And, if you do it too much, your skill with other weapons will start to atrophy), it also allows you to focus more on movement and opens up tactics such as forcing opponents into things like lava and space.

It's a good way to train your aim. Because the laser is a projectile weapon, does little damage, and bounces targets around alot, you have to hit a target that is moving rather quickly a fair number of times to succeed.

I've also found that when I play laser-only, a few other players will often join in. This leads to laser duels, which can be rather fun. (A bit like fighting with those inflatable boxing gloves they used to make back in the 90's)

I'm curious what others think about this strategy.

Again, it's not the best way to play, or something that anyone would want to always do, but it's fun now and then.

So... Anyone else want to weigh in on this?

What would be some good ways to practice aiming?

I know the minstagib level in single player is pretty good for it, but are there any other ways for me to practice, or does it just come down to playing game after game and picking it up over time?

My main concern is aiming in close combat. I find that with all the movement, I can't get a bead on any particular opponent, and am often left firing randomly, hoping to hit something.

Any suggestions are welcome and appreciated. Thanks!

AnArKiSt sent me a pm inquiring about the meditative state I claim to go in while playing Nexuiz. He suggested rather than replying to his pm, I could make a post so if anyone else is interested they too would be able to read what I have to say.

When I first started playing Nexuiz, there were so many unknowns. The thrills would quickly find me as intense situations arose quicker than I could have ever anticipated never playing what is referred to as a "twitch FPS" by some. Walking at 400 quake units/s, bunny hopping and lasering to keep a constant speed of ~double to quadruple that depending on your skill which averages out to between 35-55 mph.

When you mind doesn't know what to filter, the intensity can cause your brain to release adrenaline and raise your heart-rate. For me, this is what got me addicted, chasing this adrenaline rush. However, as you begin to understand more about the game and your mind learns to filter more and more. I play mostly CTF, so this logic will pertain mostly to CTF but you can apply it to other gametypes with a little creative thinking. As I began to simplify situations into item to item or point to point advancement of my enemy while keeping track of the situation of my closest teammates and the state of both flags, these once rather large and complicated situations become less and less intimidating. This however, also led to a reduction in the occurrence of the adrenaline rushes which may seem like a negative but it's really a positive in disguise.

No longer having the overload that was responsible for the initial adrenaline rushes, I was able to free my mind and begin to rise above my previous limitations that kept me on par with average players. Having a larger understanding of the match and what is required of me in relevance to the team, I began to see things differently. Holding in my mind a select bit of information about myself in relation to the team:

1) Where am I (duh)
2) Where are the flags?
3) What does the team need me to do now?
4) How fast do I need to get there
5) How much health / armor do I have and how much can I afford to lose in exchange for speed or a firefight
6) What weapons do I have?

I believe GreEn mArine was the person I saw mention that "you do not need to fight every battle". In fact it's sometimes best to outrun your enemy. ESPECIALLY when you have the flag. Evasion tactics are every bit as important as advancement.

Keeping these things in mind, watch the following video:

You will notice how I use the item to item based advancement of my enemy and take the idea of understanding forces to the next level with the quad laser back to my base. If I had over thought this, I would have die but as you can tell by my flow prior to this maneuver (notably the laser to the proper height of the nex), I was "in the zone".

The idea of this so called meditative state is to get into the flow or DANCE. This really comes down to good choreography, building your confidence with smooth execution of your ideas and keeping your heart rate down while not thinking too much about the next move but FEELING what you need to do next.

Often times (nearing always), I play with music in the background which usually helps my mind stay focused... though the in game sounds are certainly important as well ... but that's a topic for another discussion.

To summarize, the meditative state is about getting into a flow and as you begin to work with other players who share similar thought patterns, you begin to rise to levels you never knew existed. I've been playing Nexuiz for ~2 years and I still haven't reached the limits and probably never will... anyone who thinks they have... are only limiting themselves as I've said before a true ninja is always learning. Remember to make the big problems smaller and KEEP YOUR HEART RATE DOWN!! When you let a little mixup throw your off your game, you go into a funk and will continue to make things worse. Stay calm, move forward from the point of your mistake and try to channel your energy in a way that keeps things positive and brings you back to the flow.

Desert Castles is one of the greatest Nexuiz maps many players have never taken the time to figure out or enjoy. It's large and intimidating map with scarce pickups and slow doors. If you don' t know how to bunny hop, you may find this map is huge, frustrating and a waste of time. If do know how to bunny hop, you may find this map more manageable but still frustrating because of the scarcity of the health and armor. You may easily find yourself in a Nv1 (where N is >=1 opponents) and lose five minutes worth of hard work, obtaining weapons and armor.

The key to this map is the physics in Nexuiz. Learning how to use your weapons to gain momentum and altitude, perhaps in combination with the hook will put you on the fast track to not only victory but understanding Nexuiz on a deeper level. Thinking of Nexuiz in rhythm is important to your success on any map. By strafe jumping, circle jumping and bunny hopping, you are conserving or gaining momentum without inflicting damage on yourself. These tactics used in combination with the hook and your (damaging but sometimes necessary) laser, mortar and rocket launcher will keep you in the flow. Think of this as a dance.

Desert Castles is all our favorite concepts amplified. I believe people just get caught up in the great amount of detail mikeeusa puts into his maps but it's made up of simple concepts like. For instance, you can stack your health up to 999 in the basement by timing the healths correctly. There are only three mega-armors (100 armor) on this map, only one of which you're probably ever use, this one's in the middle, you should grab it whenever you can (if you don't have another priority at the moment like getting away from an enemy who's tailing you while you have the flag). There are two invulnerabilities, one behind the mound of each base. Depending on the situation... you use any combination of these things to gain the strength to attack.

Your machine gun is a quiet key to unlock the slow doors. One secondary bullet will be hard for the enemy to notice and doesn't cost you much. While you wait for that slow door to open (say on the roof), you can grab the electro, timed right with the hook, you can pull yourself into a slide undermeath the door. It's important to note that you cannot crouch while hooking, you'll have to hook and release at your highest velocity. Once in, I'd usually recommend going to the basement for a quick stack before you attack. Dependent upon what your teammates are doing, how confident you're feeling and what the enemy is up to give yourself a nice number between 200 and 999.

One stacked, try and go as fast as you can back up the stairs, using the mg and hook slide technique, hurry through the two faster wooden doors to the "altar room" where you can stop your health from draining further. Your next challenge is one that needs practice. You must race "the oh shit factor". "The oh shit factor" is that little thing that surrounds the flag and makes your heart drop. Many good maps have this. In Facing Worlds, it's the statue that you sometimes miss and get stuck on. In Basement CTF, it's the ceiling that catches you if you laser too high In Desert Castles, it's the trap. The spikes that drop from the ceiling operated by your enemy (or silly teammate). You can fire a shot at the window where the enemy sees you to kill you... but beware, too big of a force and you'll set off the trigger killing yourself with the trap. After you grab the flag, mg bullet hook slide back out the wooden doors (maybe picking up health from the alter room first). Do your little dance up the spiral mg bullet to the door, continuing the dance to the mortar, peak some views to check the scene from the windows in the tower, then head out to the mound behind the castle and (hopefully) pick up the invulnerability shield. Cannon yourself back to the base, catch a tower with the hook and spiral swing yourself to the top of your base. Repeat the steps above everything else is gravy.

I did not write this article to start a flamewar. Please don't bother responding if you have nothing positive to say about this map. If you hate it or have bad things to say about the author, you don't belong in this thread. This is for players who are looking to get more out of the greatest free game I've ever played, Nexuiz.

It breaks down strafing into pure physics, giving you a better idea of what's necessary to game speed in Quake. It's not perfect for Nexuiz but it will definitely give you a better idea.

There's a lot of Physics involved, please don't come back here and complain that it's too hard to understand. If so, try harder or just don't reply. I'm posting this here as a reminded to myself and to provoke conversation amongst those looking to stretch the limits of the game. I found it's really well explained even if you don't understand physics but I expect a few people to give up when seeing greek letters. Ninjaz don't doubt themselves, they accept such personal challenges.
