The Dojo-- My idea for a teaching map

RE: The Dojo-- My idea for a teaching map
I partially agree with sven. I think the explanation should reside on the wall of the room you are in though. Adding another room seems pointless.

Also, I can still jump from pillar to pillar without the laser in the laser room :)
Inspire your neighbor, they'll inspire you back.

This is a nice idea, but partially pointless...I think that spec-ing the teacher is more interactive and easier to understand. For working alone, this might be a great idea! But I think that training alone should be done after a class with a teacher to help. For example, to get better at my nexuiz, I always looked at some of the videos hosted here. And another thing, has anyone seen the logo I've created for "Thedojo?" It resides on the main wall of every room. I'm a horrible image editor. But, maybe if someone could create the images, and I could insert them... :P

THAT'S BECAUSE YOU'RE -Z-!!! Remember, the people generally being taught in this room would be people not as experienced as you! :D

RE: The Dojo-- My idea for a teaching map
I had a look at the map over the weekend and it looks really great! So far, the only suggestion I have is to perhaps put some platforms at different heights in the laser jump room, so students can practice different types like:
- laser only
- laser and jump at the same time for a higher jump
- laser up, then laser off a wall to get even higher
- you could also have a long jump area, where you could bunnyhop to pick up speed, then laser to jump far.

I don't know if this next idea would go in the weapons room or somewhere else, but how about some targets. There could be the traditional concentric rings or for more fun, how about an outline of a person. Anyway, this would be handy to practice aiming. It would be good to have enough room to try running by and shooting. Maybe a jump pad so you can try to hit the target while bouncing.

The disclaimer is that I was looking at an old version of the map, so excuse me if I asked for something that is already there in the new version. Fantastic work!
So much to do, so little time to do it

RE: The Dojo-- My idea for a teaching map
Hey all,

I made a preview off the dojo.
On a very strange way, the textures are missing.

Ok, DJ I have re-uploaded the latest version with a target-practice room. Download it and test it, also to see if the textures are missing.

RE: The Dojo-- My idea for a teaching map
Moo,

Nice map! Great idea!, but I do have some critiques.
For the bunny hopping area, you should have more room for them to just try hopping around and see the gain in speed that they can achieve.
For the laser jumping area, YOU CAN JUMP ACROSS THE WHOLE THING WITHOUT LASER... might wanna fix that.
For the trick jump area, make the easy trick jump area to the left, then have harder trick jumps to the right with smaller angles, so that they can get more of a hang of it.
For splash damage area, have rocket launchers instead of/as well as mortar.
For strafe jumping area, spread out the glass more so that you can have more time to turn.
Idea:
Jump pad area where they can learn that laser+jump pad can give you an extra boost. (may want to just merge in with laser room)

Aww......I dont wanna do work

SGT Wrote:For the bunny hopping area, you should have more room for them to just try hopping around and see the gain in speed that they can achieve.
Ok, will do

SGT Wrote:For the laser jumping area, YOU CAN JUMP ACROSS THE WHOLE THING WITHOUT LASER... might wanna fix that.
Once again, as I said to -z- earlier....You have to think if the skill group generally being taught in this place. But since two requests have come across...I guess I'll fix it.

SGT Wrote:For the trick jump area, make the easy trick jump area to the left, then have harder trick jumps to the right with smaller angles, so that they can get more of a hang of it.
This is smart. I will do this.

SGT Wrote:For splash damage area, have rocket launchers instead of/as well as mortar.
Well, no. The teacher will explain that the mortar is not the only weapon that can do splash damage.

SGT Wrote:For strafe jumping area, spread out the glass more so that you can have more time to turn.
Well its actually not strafe jumping silly. Bunny hopping +strafe jumping is done automatically if those two are taught separately. I have learned this from 1) Teaching a bit and 2) Myself.

SGT Wrote:Idea:

Thats good! I will do that also.

Ducky, you're a VERY good critique! Ty for all the comments!

RE: The Dojo-- My idea for a teaching map
[20:41:40] <MooKow> did you test out the latest thedojo map?
[20:42:44] <[-z-]> It's coming together nicely
[20:42:50] <[-z-]> I like the addition of the colors
[20:42:58] <[-z-]> I looks like you fixed up some rooms a bit
[20:43:03] <[-z-]> A few things I'd like to see:
[20:43:11] <[-z-]> - portal at the end of the strafing room
[20:43:58] <MooKow> yes?
[20:44:00] <[-z-]> - longer bunny hopping with size differences in the gaps, maybe some pilars thrown in for an added challenge (have two or more rows though, easy to difficult)
[20:44:04] <MooKow> ok
[20:44:36] <[-z-]> - taller pillars in the laser jumping room
[20:44:40] <[-z-]> bigger room in general
[20:44:45] <[-z-]> maybe 5 times the size
[20:45:00] <MooKow> well, could you, if not done already, post this up on the forumz? I'm in my Linux and I map in my windows
[20:45:00] <[-z-]> I want this room to look somewhat intimidating
[20:45:02] <MooKow> yea
[20:45:04] <[-z-]> not overbearing
[20:45:07] <[-z-]> okay
[20:45:08] <MooKow> wait why intimidating?
[20:45:22] <Dokujisan> whoa
[20:45:23] <[-z-]> So once they understand the concept, they can see how easy it is :)
